Take a night off from cooking and join us for the 2nd Annual QAE Spaghetti Dinner! It takes place on January 17th, from 5:30-7:30pm in the school cafeteria. Free spaghetti, salad and bread will be served from 5:30-7pm. That leaves 30 minutes at the end of the evening to finish eating, and to buy sweets from this year's 4th grade class. All proceeds from the bake sale will go to our 4th graders for Islandwood next fall. If you have time, stop by the volunteer table and find out how you can get more involved at QAE. If you have questions or would like to help, please email Kristin Teske at teskes@comcast.net. See you there! The QAE PTSA It's that time of year again. If you know anyone who might be interested in attending Queen Anne Elementary, have them come see what it is all about! Thank you, The QAE PTSA The QAE PTSA voted this fall to officially endorse and contribute to the Schools First campaign in support of the school levy renewals that are on the Feb ballot. Continuing our levies will ensure that the basic educational needs of Seattle Public Schools' nearly 50,000 students are met.
The campaign and our students now need your help to get out the vote. Please consider endorsing, donating and signing up for a phone bank TODAY. Ballots arrive in voter mailboxes on January 23! Phone calls are one of most effective ways to remind voters to support our schools and students! Contact Kerry Cooley-Stroum for more information or to sign-up for a phone bank. You can endorse the levies and contribute at www.schoolsfirstseattle.org. As a reminder, these levies are not new taxes, but renewals of two critically important funding sources: OPERATIONS LEVY: Accounts for more than 25% of operating funds including day-to-day basic needs such as ELL and Special Ed programs, as well as teaching and 6th period for high schools. CAPITAL LEVY (BEX IV): Provides essential funding to maintain and improve our existing schools, such as earthquake safety upgrades at 37 schools, wireless in every school and other technology improvements, plus renovating and expanding schools to meet Seattle Public Schools' growing student population. Gun control advocates will be hosting a rally and march on Sunday, January 13 in downtown Seattle. StandUp Washington will commemorate Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victims and demand a state ban of semi-automatic weapons. At the federal level, the PTA advocates for re-enactment and expansion of the federal ban on the sale and possession of military-style assault weapons, as well as a federal ban on non-sporting ammunition. Please note that Washington State PTA is not a sponsor of this event, and that the QAE PTSA takes no official position on this topic, but we wanted to let members know about this opportunity.

Filmmaker Vicki Abeles "was moved to pick up a camera and begin what would become a two-year investigation into the nationwide problem of America's pressure-cooker culture and education system-and the dangerous toll it takes on children and their families.....Premiering in 2009, the finished film, "Race to Nowhere" has since been screened in more than 6,000 schools, universities, cinemas, hospitals, corporations, education and health conferences and community centers across the US, to a cumulative audience of more than one million." The event is free, and advance registration is helpful but not necessary. We hope you - and your children - will join us.
