Drivers to the Lincoln site,
We have made changes to the traffic pattern for drop off and pick up of students. We apologize for the changes but the original plan of coming from different directions and making a u-turns in the parking lot was simply unworkable. Painters were here last Friday night to re-paint for the new plan and it looks great—with one ***glitch. The Plan—Morning drop off Drivers walking students into the building: Enter the parking lot from the Interlake (west) side After entering the lot take an immediate left where the sign says, “Enter” Park in the lot and use the newly painted crosswalk to enter the gates onto the playground An adult or eventually a crossing guard will be at the crosswalk Exit through the east gate onto Woodlawn and turn left to 45th Drivers dropping off students without parking: Enter the parking lot from the Interlake (west) side Pull straightforward to the crosswalk along the right (south) side of the double lane Please wait until your car is third in line from the crosswalk before you let your child exit the car on the right (south) side of the vehicle. Students will walk inside the red line to the playground. Soon we will have patrol students opening doors and helping students disembark. After dropping off your student you will exit the parking lot through the east gate onto Woodlawn and turn left to 45th Buses Buses will enter the parking lot from the Interlake (west) side Buses will park on the left (north) side of the double lane Students will exit the bus and cross at the crosswalk while all car traffic is stopped Buses will exit through the east gate onto Woodlawn and turn left to 45th Important drop off note This plan will work only if those drivers dropping off students do not get out of the car and disrupt the flow of the drop off lane. If you need to attend to anything with your child while dropping off please pull into the lot, park your car, attend to whatever it is and walk students to the crosswalk. One car can create havoc if it impedes the flow, other parents get frustrated and try to pull out and go around. The Plan—Afternoon pick up The traffic flow for afternoon pick up will be the same. A problem area will be if a large number of cars are waiting in the drop off/pick up zone and begin to overflow onto Interlake or block the entrance to the parking lot for other drivers or buses. We would encourage you to park your vehicle if the number of cars create a hazard. ***The Glitch: There are arrows painted in both directions on the exit onto Woodlawn. Anyone entering there will either head on with oncoming traffic or encounter a “Do Not Enter” sign in the lot. We will attempt to get that remedied quickly. David Elliott has some updates regarding volunteers needed, classroom assignments, School Messenger, and setup progress. View the Principal's update here.
All second graders are in Room 221 with Ms. Cryan-Leary,
All third graders are in Room N202 with Ms. Eileen and Ms. Mertel, and All fourth and fifth graders are in Room N203 with Mr. Bailey-Fogarty. Class lists for kindergarten and K/1st Grade will be provided via email shortly. The classrooms will be Kindergarten in Room 227 with Ms. Simon, and Kindergarten/first grade in Room 223 with a teacher soon to be announced. The third grade teachers, Joey Mertel and Diane Eileen, have put together a list of supplies needed for their classroom. Instead of the $50 request for supplies please provide the items listed for third grade.
A reminder that information about the cafeteria and other facts to help you get started with the new school year can be found here.
Volunteers are needed during the first week of school - see Principal Elliott's latest update for the details. The First Morning of School Wednesday, September 8th at 9:20AM For our youngest: On the first day of school (Wednesday, September 8th) we suggest you walk your child directly into the classroom and help him or her settle in. Most older students won’t need or want this but you are welcome to walk your child in if you choose to. We suggest arriving at school no earlier than 9:00AM and departing by 9:25AM. Parking will be a challenge so allow yourself plenty of time to find a spot on one of the residential streets or in the north parking lot. Please respect our neighbors and do not block driveways or park in no-parking zones. For Families: We invite you to join your fellow QAE Elementary parents and guardians in the cafeteria at 9:25AM for a coffee social sponsored by the QAEPTSA. It’s a great way to kick off the school year! Mr. Bailey needs help from 2-3 parents on the first day of school, probably right before or right after lunch, chaperoning small groups as they do a digital scavenger hunt around the building. Contact Mr. Bailey via email at jcbaileyfogart@seattleschools.org if you can help out.
If you have time to assist in labeling the classroom libraries or setting up desks, please come by Lincoln today. If you'd like to call ahead, the main office phone number is 252-2480, and the grade 4/5 classroom phone number is 252-5933.
The school is looking great, and is very nearly ready for the first day. The classrooms are large and light, and many hours have gone into making them some of the best elementary rooms in Seattle. At orientation, families met the staff, toured the school grounds and were afforded the opportunity to meet with Mr. Elliott. The current staff is very nearly organized for the first day and beyond. They are feeling very enthusiastic, though not complete. Because of fluctuating enrollment, QAE is very lucky to have been granted another full time teacher, to be hired by QAE, and second teacher to share with McDonald Elementary.
This will lower class sizes to around 25 students per room, which is excellent news for everyone! The two new teachers are being hired now, and will hopefully be in place for the first day. QAE will hire a kindergarten/1st grade teacher, and McDonald has hired 2 teachers who will job share and be the instructors for both school’s third graders. The classes will be as follows: David Elliott Principal Rachel Simon Kindergarten To Be Hired K/1st grade Katie Cryan Leary 2nd grade Joelle Mertel & Dianne Eileen, 3rd grade shared with McDonald Joe Bailey-Fogarty 4th / 5th grade Jeffrey Riley, Librarian / Technology Specialist Niki Meyers, Special Education Brent Roberts, Physical Education Carla Kirch, Administrative Assist Thank you for your patience with these last-minute changes. If you have questions/concerns, please feel free to contact D The Seattle Public School District has given QAE parents approval to ride the bus to and from school on Wednesday, Sept. 8., as long as the bus driver of the route approves. There are two caveats:
1) There must be a seat for all students assigned to a bus route. Therefore, if a driver feels there will not be enough room for all assigned students, parents will be turned away. 2) Parents will need to find their own transportation upon leaving the school. The transportation department would like parents to ride the bus with their child only on the first day of school. However, parents are free to discuss the matter with each individual bus driver. |
