Mr. Munson is the author of Enemy Pie, an endearing story about how to turn an enemy into a best friend. There will 4 separate presentations led by Mr. Munson, as well as a "Lunch with the Author" for one of our lucky classrooms. Presentation schedules for each classroom will be announced later. There will also be copies of Enemy Pie for sale with a book signing at the end of the day. If you are interested in knowing more about Derek Munson and Enemy Pie, you can check his blog out here: http://enemypie.com/blog1/ The Seattle School Board on Wednesday decided to extend the school year by two days to make up for January’s inclement weather.
The last day of school will be Friday, June 22. Seattle students lost three days of school in January because of severe winter weather conditions. One day was made up on Jan. 27. The School Board voted 0 to 7 against applying for a waiver from the state, which would have allowed Seattle Public Schools to not make up those two days. Not making up the days would have saved the district about $500,000. “This is a statement on the value of classroom instruction,” said Board President Michael DeBell, after the unanimous vote. Thanks to all who have taken the survey already! This is the last reminder for the PTSA budget survey, which will be closing on April 10.
The PTSA board will soon begin work on developing a budget for the 2012-2013 academic year. We need you! We've put together a short survey to get your thoughts on the programs and projects we currently fund, and some potential ideas for the future. The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Please take a moment to give us your thoughts and ideas. The survey will be available until April 10th. After that, we'll compile the information and use it to craft a budget that we'll present to the general membership in June for approval and adoption. Thank you for taking time to help us. We're getting the garden ready for spring planting. All of our students will be putting vegetable and butterfly garden seeds and starts in the ground during Garden Week, April 30-May 4. Before the kids can get to work, we need to prepare the garden space for them. If you have ever appreciated QAE Cafe program, or watched the kids eat our garden tomatoes like candy in the fall, or simply been grateful that we are fortunate enough to have a garden, now is the time to take action. We can not maintain the garden with the very small group of parents who have been working it alone for much of the year. If we're going to keep our garden program alive, we need you! No experience required, just show up and we will give you direction-- you might be surprised by how much fun you have.
If you support the garden program and are available, please join us at the garden for any amount of time on one or both of these days. Let's keep our garden alive and growing for our kids and our community. GARDEN WORK PARTIES: Tuesday, April 17, 3 - 5:30pm (during Spring Break week) Saturday, April 28, 10am - ? Let's celebrate our terrific library and our amazing teacher-librarian, Mr. Jeffrey!
One way to show our appreciation and support is by sending Mr. Jeffrey gifts of love from his QAE Library Wish List. Please donate a book or two to Mr. Jeffrey's wonderful library that our kids love so much. All books purchased go directly to our wonderful library and a percentage of the purchase (6%) goes to QAE via our Amazon Associates program. PTSA is in search of a large clean rug or carpet remnant (at least 8 ft x 10 ft) for use by the new Tuesday morning Lego club. Do you have one you could loan or donate? Please email Alison Payauys (apayauys@gmail.com) if you can help out.
