Another festive Move-A-Thon is in the books! Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers, teachers, staff, and especially Ms. Josie for making it such a fun day. We were treated to great weather and the sky cleared up just in time to start. It was incredible to see students moving for their school with support from their families and friends!

​The QAE PTSA raised over $35,000 through the Move-A-Thon fundraising campaign! This money will go towards art classes, tutors, supplies and much more this year. Thank you to all who have already donated and shared!

As the 2023-24 school year draws to a close, the PTSA Board would like to extend our warmest wishes to the QAE community for a safe and enjoyable summer.
 
Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time, expertise and passion to make this such a memorable year. The PTSA set out this year to offer as many opportunities as possible for our community to gather and build connections and we feel proud of what has been achieved and humbled by the enthusiasm and commitment from so many people in our community.
Thank you to Mr. Warren, our wonderful teachers and supporting staff for guiding and caring for our students.

Congratulations to all the students on their hard work, dedication and growth over the past school year and especially to the graduating 5th grade students. We wish you all the very best for the future.

Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you at one of the exciting upcoming events of the 2024-25 school year (see save the dates below)!

There are volunteer opportunities for everyone ranging from volunteering time on campus or at home, to serving in a role on the Board. We pride ourselves in making sure that everyone interested has the ability to impact our students’ lives.

Currently, the areas in which we most need assistance are: 
  • Co-Volunteer Coordinator: Help recruit and assign volunteers for PTSA events such as community events, school field trips/outings, lunch & recess volunteers.
  • Co-Enrichment Coordinator: Be part of the decision-making process for after school-programs and coordinating enrichment activities. Busy times for this role are before the start of each trimester for sign up and toward the end of each trimester when you will help guide next trimester’s classes. Trimesters start in September, January and April
  • Join the Fundraising Team: Fundraising is critical to our mission, and the fundraising committee has a variety of needs. From planning event logistics and communications to identifying and reaching out to potential sponsors, there are many roles on the fundraising team. Join the team and choose a specific role that fits your availability and interest. 
  • Safety Patrol Team: The QAE Safety Patrol consists of 4th and 5th Grade Students who assist all QAE students in getting onto the school grounds safely each morning and leaving the school grounds each afternoon. We hope to build a team of parents to help supervise and support our patrollers. Team members would be asked to be present for some Safety Patrol shifts, be it one morning a week or every afternoon after school. Any time commitment is welcome and appreciated. 
  • Join the Communications Team: Our communications team is responsible for maintaining the PTSA website, reaching out to media regarding our school, posting on our social media accounts, and creating a monthly student-focused newsletter.

Meet Sophia Mandell, 1st Grade Long Term Substitute Teacher​

  1. I would get on an airplane and travel somewhere sunny and warm! If my dogs could be invisible too, they would join.​

  3. I would teach a class about the importance of adopting animals from animal shelters.
  4. A blueberry (because it's a superfood!)
  5. I've always wanted to be a teacher! I was a snowboard teaching assistant in middle school and an instructor in high school.

5th Grade Fall PBL
The 5th grade Fall PBL topic explores the intersections between food, identity, and culture. As part of our work, students read mentor text picture books that reflect the topic and identified an important “food theme” that the story represents. They then created a piece of art that illustrates the main food featured in the story and includes the theme students selected.

What's your happy reading spot?
A few QAE 5th graders have shared their answers to this cozy question.

​My happy home reading spot is in my parents bedroom, sitting with my cat. When it’s a winter day, I like to go under the covers and sometimes drink hot cocoa with marshmallows. I love it there when it’s misting, raining, pouring, snowing, or when there is a thunderstorm during a sunset. I love my reading spot because my cat always walks up to me and plops down beside me. I also love it because it’s nice and quiet, just me, my cat, and the book. I get carried away in the books rough pages, me running through a field of words, black ink, and flashing colors. I’m always losing track of time. It’s a good reading spot to me because it’s quiet, calming, comfy, and fun. Just me and my cat in a white room, in a big bed, with a beautiful view of my neighborhood.

​As I got in my living rooms comfy chair as I went to stretch on my stool. And got on my two pillows as the fireplace warmed them up. As I put my arm on my wooden arm rest attached to the chair. And I was so happy it was so quiet because my little brother was sleeping. And I opened my book and started reading. Then I moved my legs from the stool to on the very soft grey carpet. And I read an extra ten minutes.

​In my absolute favorite spot to read (My Bed) there’s blankets on top of blankets. Its also nice and cozy enough for my dogs to sit with me! I also have 8 legged roommates to remind me of my arachnophobia! But my favorite part is its feel of plants and trees waving around me and the sunlight coming through the window that makes me like its alive. It’s also pretty dark and quiet with my mom a room away which makes me feel safe. That’s mostly why I love my spot! In conclusion I love my reading spot because it makes me feel at home! ​

Reading at QAE!


​In Reading Club students spent time learning how to read! We learn phonics and practice our phonemic awareness. We build our reading fluency as well as our reading stamina by learning strategies and practicing reading just right books. There are a lot of books in the classroom that we can read, and sometimes students bring books from their classrooms to read. There are lots of cozy spots to read, but most of the time we sit at a table with our friends and read books together.

A Note from the PTSA President: 
​  Hello parents and welcome to 2023-24! I am so excited to have each and every one of you with us this year. Like last year, the PTSA’s focus is going to be investing in our community. Last year was the first year that we were fully back together post-pandemic. While we had some growing pains getting ramped back up after several years, by the end of the year, we’d settled into a cadence of having events and a greater sense of community. I know I feel fortunate to have my family a part of this school. 
    We have an incredible team of volunteers set up to make this year great too. We’re adding events, we’re maximizing all the hangout time we all look forward to, and we’re going to make this a great year!   
    There is a more serious topic that has been top of mind for me, and—I know—many of you: the budget constraints facing Seattle Public Schools. SPS is facing a significant budget shortfall moving into 2024-25 school year. SPS has made it clear that school closures are on the table and that they will be prioritizing budgeting for “well-resourced schools.”  
    I want to be clear that we do not know whether this will impact QAE.  
    What we do know: 
  • Most of the district’s budget comes from state funding (61%). Most of these funds are apportioned based on the number of students in a district and assuming a certain number of students per school (400 per elementary school). 
  • Because funds for things like Principals are based on those school sizes, smaller schools draw resources away from other places.  
  • Based on this reasoning, the district has developed the idea of “well-resourced schools”, which they are promoting as a way to solve budget issues 
  • QAE has 214 students.  
  • Many other elementary schools also are below this target of 400 kids per school (including John Hay) and we have reason to believe one of the elementary schools on Queen Anne will be under consideration for closure. 
    As we all know—and have felt—QAE has many distinctive characteristics and draws a unique group of families. While we do not know what the impact will be, it is important that the district hear from us on three topics: 
  1. The reasons your family chose to be at QAE,  
  1. That option school make a difference in your life, and 
  1. QAE’s impact on you and your children. 
    We’re asking that you reach out to the school district with your thoughts. We’re hopeful that explaining why QAE is special will help inform their decision-making; in particular, we’d like to articulate the unique value that option schools like QAE (which focuses on project-based learning) have for families like ours. We believe that a positive message sharing the benefits will be received much better than focusing on the deficiencies of SPS.

What You Can Do
    Let SPS know what Queen Anne Elementary means to you! Please send an email to Regional Executive Director of Schools for the Central District, Director James Mercer with your QAE story. Ultimately, we want the district to know how much we value option schools in general, and Queen Anne Elementary in particular. 
    In your email, please include how many students you have at Queen Anne Elementary, and where your child[ren] would have attended school if not for QAE, be it the school for which your family is zoned, a private school, or any other option. Then please detail why your family chose QAE, and what drew your family to an option school, whether it's QAE's focus on Project Based or Social-Emotional Learning, the size of the student body, the fact that it is an option school and, therefore, able to pivot quickly whenever there's a need, or any other reason particular to your family. Any personal anecdotes about Queen Anne Elementary and why it is so valuable to you or your children would be wonderful to include as well.
    Our goal is to make enough noise about the benefits of Queen Anne Elementary that the district will definitely hear us. Thank you!

Move-A-Thon is October 6!   
    One of the most fun events of our QAE school year returns! The Move-A-Thon will take place during the school day on October 6th. Students will run, walk, roll, or move however they choose around a track set up around the playground. There will be a DJ, t-shirts for every student, and popsicles!
   This year, we're aiming to raise $50,000 as a community. The funds raised go towards supporting school programs such as art classes and supplies, project-based learning, reading specialists, classroom instructional assistants and community events. This year, we are using Zeffy, a zero-fee fundraising platform, so 100% of the proceeds go straight to programs you want to support! Help us meet our school-wide fundraising goal by joining a classroom team on Zeffy here.
    You can help out by volunteering on the day-of. Please make sure you have completed the SPS volunteer application here then sign up for one or more volunteer slots here. We also welcome spectators. Please come cheer on our movers!

     All are welcome and encouraged to attend the first PTSA General Membership Meeting of the school year at QAE from 6-7:30pm.
     The agenda will include a variety of topics, including our efforts to keep Queen Anne Elementary open as an option school.

​Fall 2023 After-School Enrichment
     Join your classmates for fall after-school enrichment activities. Options this year include sports, coding, Legos, dance, crafts and improv!

On behalf of our entire community of parents and students, the PTSA thanks teachers and staff.  We appreciate you showing up every day for our kids,  providing the best quality education and social emotional support possible and having fun. You are the other adults that many of our kids spend the most time with every day besides their direct caregivers. That is astounding. Thank you! QAE Pillars & Southeast Seattle Schools Fundraising Alliance. 

We're happy to share that QAE PTSA was able to put action behind one of our school's core pillars; We are concerned, confident and compassionate citizens of the world. Our donation to the SSSFA, along with other organizations and PTAs, helped them achieve their goal of $15,000. This funding will help support 15 schools in the southeast part of our school district. This is meaningful action that elevates us all.

Dear QAE, 
Our school was established in 2010 by a passionate, dedicated and involved group of teachers, staff and parents. With the organizational foundation they put in place 12 years ago our school volunteer leadership has been able to glean stability, grounding and direction during these past three years of uncertainty. Your current PTSA is asking you to help make sure this stabilizing yet flexible effort continues for our future students, teachers and community. Becoming a board member of the PTSA is a great way to build community for our kids (and as a parent!), and to create enrichment opportunities for the whole school. We’d love to have you join us for the 2022-2023 school year!
Please note: All roles can be shared with a friend, and current board members are happy to talk to you further about what the roles entail. If you are at all curious, want to learn more, have questions or have ideas about our school. Please take the next step and connect. We need you to help build our Board! You can reach out in the following ways:
  • Talk to any volunteer in our community like your class coordinator! 
  • Directly email our PTSA Vice President, Sarah Kaiser at vp1@qaeptsa.org 
  • Come to Caffeine with Janine this Monday morning at 7:55 a.m. in our school courtyard.

Yay!!! All parents and guardians are invited to volunteer and join in on the outdoor fun!
When: Monday, June 13th all day!
Where: Our QAE school playground.
What: There will be playful games, face painting, ping-pong, picture booth, water game stations, sack races, hula hooping and more.

To help make an extra special day for the kids, our Field Day Committee is looking for the following:

  • Large outdoor speaker

Every student will receive a 2021-22 yearbook courtesy of QAE PTSA. We're committed to purchasing one book per student and one per staff. To help cover the costs and ensure special mementos like this as well as student & community enriching events and general PTSA initiatives, can continue in the future, we're asking community to help cover the cost if you are able. Any and all donations help all students, families and staff. Pay what you can here.  ​

 May is Mental Health Awareness month. National Parent Teacher Association has developed the PTA Healthy Minds Program. It includes all sorts of resources for families including how to prioritize mental health, family tool kits and community resource finders. We hope that you find this helpful. 
Check out Notes from the Backpack, a podcast for parents by parents. The most recent episode is  entitled, "Improving Student Wellness." 

Last PTSA Membership Meeting of the school year-please come! 

Please join us on the evening of Wednesday, June 8. Official business will run from 6-7:30 pm. At this time important budget discussions and voting will take place.  15 minutes before and after is reserved for open questions. Dedicated hearts of many volunteers makes our community stronger. The PTSA is recruiting board members and board directors for the 2022-23 school year. End of year pack up - Here's how you can help.

Our principals and teachers could use some helping hands to get QAE classrooms in ship-shape ready for next September. Volunteers are needed to help with organizing, sorting and boxing up supplies. This work will take place in empty rooms during the school day, and needs to be completed by June 17th. If you can offer a few hours of your time over the next few weeks, please email our volunteer coordinator, Jeanine MacQuarrie, at volunteer2@qaeptsa.org. Indicating your general availability will be helpful. Preschoolers are welcome!

Get on your bike and ride! Join QAE moms, Meg Kelly and Cindy Reiner, for a mostly flat, easy-paced evening bike ride around Queen Anne hill on Thursday, May 19th! We will meet near the Elk's Lodge to glow up our bikes....yes, that's a thing, then head out on the Westlake Trail. Mid-ride we will stop to enjoy beverages and snacks while watching the sunset at Myrtle Edwards park. Only 4 openings remain. Visit this link to learn more and to reserve your spot! Southeast Seattle School's Fundraising Alliance

At QAE, one of the five pillars is "We are concerned, confident and compassionate citizens of the world." Help put this core value into action by considering a donation to the Southeast Seattle Schools Fundraising Alliance. SSSFA is currently participating in their second annual Move-a-Thon, and they have a goal of raising $150,000 in donations that will support 15 schools in southeast Seattle. There are three ways to contribute:

Field Day 2022!

An end of year day full of fun for our students. We need you to join in the fun too! Please consider being part of the planning team! Tentative Dates are set for Monday, June 13 or June 16th (last week of school). As Co-Chair you will help support the overall flow and details of the day, purchasing items as needed and communicate with volunteers. Explore School Parent Leadership - Nomination Committee

The PTSA will have open positions on next year's board and are currently forming a Nomination Committee that will help to fill these positions. 

The goal of the committee is to lead the process in matching people with open positions. One could say they are the match makers in this love story. 
You do not need to be on the board to participate in this committee. The committee needs to be in place as soon as possible in order to fill as many of the essential volunteer rolls as possible. A few positions that have already been identified are Board President, Secretary, Fundraising Lead, Co-Treasurer. 
 We'd really like your help in identifying people who might be interested in serving on the PTSA, and we'd also like to invite any of you who are interested in serving on the nominating committee to please let us know by May 20th.

The PTSA has special plans for Teacher Appreciation Week! A Staff Farmer's Market is being organized for Thursday, May 5th. PTSA needs help acquiring local fresh fruits/veggies/herbs/flowers/products. Do you have a connection to a local farm/product? Can you donate part of your harvest from the pea patch that week?  Can you donate your CSA box that week? An Evening for New Families- May 3rd

Ms. Roy is leading a Welcome to Queen Anne event for new families on May 3rd 5:30 – 7 pm. This is a drop-in style with a PTSA table set up to offer information, answer questions and get to know people. It's so nice to meet people in person again! QAE's very own 4th and 5th grade Explorers will be tour guides. Meet outside in the school courtyard.

Starting on Monday, May 9th from 7:55 a.m. - 8:25 a.m. Ms. Roy will be available to informally gather outside with parents to connect over coffee. This is a great time to ask questions and share ideas.  All are welcome and we are so happy to have this tradition come back to life! Keep tuning in here for the June Caffeine with Janine date. 

Burgers and Beers - May 12th

Get tickets here. Few things are better at building community than getting together for burgers and beer. When the beer comes from local favorite Rooftop Brewing and the burgers are SMASH burgers, you have the makings of a historic event. Grab your friends and head to Rooftop's private event space by the Ballard bridge to enjoy delicious, almost famous "Oklahoma Smash Burgers" by Seattle's self-proclaimed smash-burger connoisseur extraordinaire, owner of Caffe Ladro, and QAE parent, Jack Kelly. It'll be a great opportunity to meet new people, bond with those you know, and consume the best of brews and burgers. Only 6 spaces left! Proceeds go to QAE PTSA.
