Spring in Seattle is here and so is QAE Culture Night! We're so thrilled to come together to share food, music, dance, and fun! Over the years, this event has become one that families look forward to being able to gather and celebrate one another, celebrate the diversity of QAE, and the diverse communities of Seattle.
When: Friday, June 7th, 6-8pm Where: QAE at John Marshall, Cafeteria We’re so excited that the Students of Color group, comprised of 4th and 5th graders, will be playing an integral role in leading this event with help in marketing to other classes and signs around school. We also have a special something planned from them for the night of the event! Also, we've confirmed that the Filipino Youth Activities (FYA) Drill Team will be performing! Established in 1959, (and celebrating its 60th year!) the FYA Drill Team was created to enhance the Filipino American Culture, to instill discipline, respect, hard work, responsibility, accountability and core Filipino family values. In addition to private performances, the FYA Drill Team can be seen at APIA Heritage Festival (Seattle Center) Pagidiriwang Philippine Festival (Seattle Center), Pista Sa Nayon (Seafair), and in parades and festivals all over Washington state, including the Torchlight Parade this summer! As always, the success of this event is only based on participation! All families are welcome! Below are some links on how you can participate. Do you have a favorite dish? Then stick around for Caffeine with Janine starting at 9:10am -- it’s an open forum to ask questions of Principal Roy (and have some coffee). Like many of you, we as the QAE PTSA Board have been processing the news of the group of Queen Anne Elementary teachers leaving for Magnolia Elementary. We recognize this is a wonderful opportunity for these teachers to be part of a starter school. As one parent shared – these teachers are seeds going into the world to grow these communities and children. And we will certainly miss them, celebrate them and wish them tons of success.
But, honestly, we are a mix of emotions. We’re wondering some of the same things you may be – what this means for our school, whether we’ll be able to find teachers as wonderful as those who are leaving, why teachers and families would want to leave QAE. These are complex issues, but we want to highlight a few things we’ve been thinking about:
There is a lot to process, but we feel excited about the long-term future of QAE. Maybe it's because we see Janine's dedication on a daily basis, the strong teachers who are staying or the truly incredible candidates who have been applying. We see new teachers eager to join QAE and drive it into its next phase as a learning community while honoring our Five Pillars and SEL approach. If you have questions or would like to talk, please consider coming to a Caffeine with Janine after Monday Morning Meeting, reaching out to her directly or speaking with a PTSA Board member. Best, Ian, Reem, Sandra and the rest of the PTSA team PS - If you have additional questions you can email them to vp2@qaeptsa.org (this will go to Sandra to consolidate) PPS - If you know you are not returning to QAE next year, it would be tremendously helpful if you did the following:

The QAE PTSA is hosting a screening of The Most Dangerous Year on Wednesday, Feb. 27th at John Marshall. It was named on the best documentaries at the Seattle International Film Festival and has been featured in festivals around the country. It's a compelling story exploring how Washington families (including some from QAE) with transgender children fought multiple legislative efforts to limit their rights.
When: Wednesday, February 27th, 6:30pm Where: QAE at John Marshall, 520 NE Ravenna Blvd Cost: To cover the cost of showing the film, $5 per adult who attends. Kids are welcome and free! RSVP: Please RSVP here to reserve your spots... All are welcome to attend, including families from other schools. We want this screening to be inclusive and accessible to all — if the cost is a burden, please come anyway! About the Movie In 2016 a small group of families with transgender kids joined the fight against a wave of discriminatory anti-transgender legislation that swept the nation and their home state. With the help of a coalition of civil rights activists and ally lawmakers, these families embarked on an uncharted journey of fighting for their children’s lives and futures in this present-day civil rights story. Gael Tarleton:
----- I am the PTA co-President at Loyal Heights Elementary School. Our community has become increasingly concerned about the state's failure to fully fund education. While property taxes continue to go up, SPS is yet again facing a potential $40mil deficit, and our PTA continues to raise money to support basic education for our kids. In response to our concerns, we have arranged for Representative Gael Tartleton come speak at our school and answer questions. We would like to invite all the staff and families at your schools to attend this Q&A session. Global Reading Challenge Our 4th and 5th graders will have the option to participate in the Global Reading Challenge this year. This is a reading competition program sponsored by the Seattle Public Library. Students are teamed up and given a set of books to read that they will later be quizzed on in a competition setting. You can read more about the Global Reading Challenge here: https://www.spl.org/programs-and-services/learning/global-reading-challenge If your child expresses interest, he or she may bring a student application form home which is due Wednesday, October 10th. After forms are in, teachers will design mixed teams that will work together to read their titles and be ready to be quizzed on them. More information can be found on the Global Reading Challenge application forms. The big unveiling of this year’s books will be on November 1st! We held an informational session today during lunch and anticipation is building! Returning Library Books This year all students have a scheduled library time on either Monday or Tuesday. Please remember to have your student return books he or she has read by either Monday or Tuesday so that he or she can select new books. We are trying to keep a soft limit of 5 books out at a time to ensure much-loved titles are available as often as possible. Thank you for your diligence! We'd like your feedback! Please take a few moments to provide input on spending priorities and let us know how the PTSA is doing. Want to see more (or less) of certain type of events? Want to know what the PTSA is considering funding next year? Take the survey now and let us know! Your input will help us understand your perspective on the 2017-2018 school year, help make the 2018-2019 year at John Marshall even better, and help us finalize the 2018-2019 PTSA budget.
Take the PTS Priorities survey now... We'll finalize the 2018-2019 PTSA budget with your feedback and present it at the June 6th 6:30-8pm PTSA All Membership meeting for a vote. Be sure to join us! |
