QAE PTSA This year for our coat drive, the PTSA decided to benefit a personal favorite of Mr. Elliott, Treehouse for Kids, a foster child charity. There will be donation boxes at both main entrances to the brick building and the treehouse. Foster kids get used to parting with familiar clothing and favorite toys, saying goodbye to family and friends, and changing schools time and again. Your donations will stock the Treehouse "Wearhouse", a free store where foster youth can shop for clothes, shoes, school supplies, books, toys and other essentials that help them feel good and fit in.
Kids achieve academically when they feel good about themselves. Fitting in or being part of the team makes a huge difference. The donations Treehouse collects provides for our community’s foster kids, making sure they have everything they need to learn and thrive. Here’s how you can help: Buy one or more gifts for a foster child. Make a donation of "almost" new clothes (coats and sweaters) and toys or books. Please bring your donations to the school and drop them in the donation boxes at either main entrance. No time to shop or clean out your closet? You can still help by giving online at www.treehouseforkids.org/donate. Don’t forget to put Queen Anne Elementary on the “Drive Host” line at check-out. You can also mail your cash or check donation to Treehouse, or drop it off with me, Kristin Teske the PTSA Community Development Chair. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and thank you for supporting kids in foster care, [email protected]. Dr. Gephart has lectured nationally and internationally to physician groups on ADHD and is the author of numerous medical articles on ADHD and its ramifications. His current emphasis is in teaching physicians to screen for, recognize, and treat such coexistent conditions as anxiety and depression, which commonly are secondary complications in ADHD patients. The talk will emphasize practical suggestions for parents in how to monitor their child's mental health, with time for questions. This is a rare public presentation by Dr. Gepart. Dr. Harlan Gephart is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and Consultant in Behavioral Pediatrics at Pediatric Associates, Bellevue, Washington. Dr. Gephart trained in Pediatrics at the University of Washington, and practiced both General and Behavioral Pediatrics at Group Health Cooperative. From 1990 to 2002 he was Medical Director of the Center for Attentional Deficit Disorders in Redmond, Washington. During that period he assessed and treated several thousand children with ADHD. The parenting behavioral program developed in that clinic became a national model for that treatment modality in ADHD patients. Research publications from the clinic studied the cost of ADHD, Coexistent Mental Health concerns in ADHD, and Behavior Modification treatment. (Twice exceptional (2e) kids are kids who are academically gifted and also have a disability, such as dyslexia, autism, ADHD, or SI.) Please consider joining Queen Anne Elementary legislative co-chairs Angie Masco and Tanea Stephens as we drive to Olympia to join Washington State PTA for a full day of school advocacy. We will meet with our district's legislators and voice the paramount importance of school funding schools first, staying focused on advanced basic education reform (passed in 2009, 2010) and access to algebra in middle school (look for a parent education night about this subject later this spring).

While establishing body awareness, muscle development, flexibility, coordination and basic locomotor skills, this class expands each child’s inner creativity. Exploration of space, shapes, pathways, rhythms, and movement qualities will also help your child to develop problem solving skills. We will introduce the basic Ballet positions, some preparatory steps and sequencing with special attention to posture, core strength and clean technique. We’ll also focus on musicality, phrasing, terminology, and Ballet etiquette while gaining strength and flexibility in all muscle groups – all this, wrapped in fun themes that the children will love. The warm and friendly atmosphere will foster camaraderie, cooperation, encouragement and a positive self image. Leggings and a T-shirt recommended for girls; sweats and T-shirt recommended for boys. But any loose comfortable clothes or dance attire will be acceptable. Class Time: Mondays, 3:45-4:45 Dates: February 4 – April 1, 2013 (No class February 18) Cost: $80 Registration is now open at: http://www.americandanceinstitute.com/Registration.aspx Drama Club Winter Session for Kindergarten-2nd grade and 3rd-5th grade: Don't miss out on a chance to find your inner Actor/Director/Playwrite!
