This message was sent from the QAE PTSA to our community on Friday, March 24th. We hope to see you at the meeting on March 29th! See the Boundaries and Option Status FAQ page for more details...
Dear Queen Anne Elementary families,
If you believe that Queen Anne Elementary should continue to be an Option School located at its current site on Boston Street, please attend a meeting at QAE on Wed. March 29th, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.
In the 2018-2019 school year, Seattle Public Schools will reopen Magnolia Elementary School. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) has worked with the city to plan and coordinate Magnolia as an attendance area school. SPS is having community meetings to engage families as it redraws the boundaries of Blaine, Lawton, and Coe to balance enrollment and alleviate capacity issues at each existing school.
At the first community meeting, on March 13th, SPS presented six scenarios of different boundary lines. Four of those scenarios would mean that some students who live on the west side of Queen Anne hill and are currently zoned for Coe would be part of the new Magnolia School zone.
At that meeting and also in emails directly to SPS, a group of parents (not from QAE) who want to prevent changes to the current Coe boundaries have suggested that QAE be changed from an Option program to a neighborhood school. Other parents have suggested that the QAE Option program be moved to the Magnolia School when it opens in Sept. 2018 so the QAE campus can be used as a neighborhood school.
If QAE was changed from an Option School to a neighborhood school the innovative programs that QAE offers might be at risk. Option School status provides "programs of choice" and for QAE that includes our 5 Pillars and technology focus.
No decisions have been made, but our community coming together on March 29th, being present and participating in this important conversation will relate a strong and clear message to SPS that we’re invested in decisions that affect our school and families. The not-so-distant future of QAE is dependent on our parent voices now.
Principal Janine Roy, Central Region Executive Director of Schools Sarah Pritchett, SPS Director of Enrollment Planning and the QAE PTSA Board will all be in attendance. SPS Director Sue Peters has been invited to the meeting.
We hope to see you at the important meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29th at the QAE Cafeteria. The PTSA has created a FAQ page with more details about how we got here, our concerns, details about our Option program.

Dear QAE Families/Guardians:
On March 13th, a Community Meeting was held at Catherine Blaine with families from Coe, Catherine Blaine, and Lawton to discuss boundary changes regarding Magnolia Elementary, which will open in the Fall of 2018. (Information can be found on the Magnolia Elementary Boundary Planning Page). This page will continue to be updated throughout the process. All questions and feedback can be sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org.) Queen Anne Elementary and John Hay Elementary communities were not part of this Community Meeting as the potential Magnolia boundaries were not anticipated to impact our schools. I was invited to attend the meeting as a neighboring principal. At the meeting, some participants made suggestions about easing the overcrowding at our neighborhood schools that would affect Queen Anne Elementary. These suggestions were unanticipated, and they need to be discussed within our community and with our neighboring communities.
Following the Community Meeting, I met with Director of Enrollment Planning, Ashley Davies, and Enrollment Planning Project Specialist, E.R. Alvarez to work together to look at how Magnolia Elementary’s opening in 2018 will impact schools in our neighborhood. I invited Ashley Davies and E.R. Alvarez to come to a Queen Anne Elementary Community Meeting to be held on Wednesday, March 29th @ 6:30 PM in the QAE cafeteria to answer community questions from QAE families, share boundary procedures and gather our parent community feedback on how we can help overcrowding in our neighboring schools.
Many thanks to our QAE community for working together on this. As QAE PTSA President Heath Dixon says, "This is a perfect time for us to model what we're teaching our children about how to handle challenges. Let’s help to share the facts calmly within and outside of our community and help our neighbors solve this problem collaboratively. We need to contribute to the district's process of making decisions about boundaries in our neighborhoods. That starts by encouraging communication and understanding."
I am gathering all of the information I can to compile questions, comments, or suggestions from you before the meeting so that the format for the meeting can be set according to our community’s needs. Please email me at email@example.com to share your input.

The Online Auction supporting QAE is well underway! Thank you for your generous support so far. Anybody can bid, including friends and family, even if you aren't going on Friday. Just visit the auction site to view the items and make a bid...
We have 446 bids on 117 items in the first two days, and have already raised $10K+. Six items have double-digit bids, and half of the items have 4 or more bids. But it's not too late: we have over 20 items that don't have a bid yet, so there are some bargains to be had. And we've added several items this week, including a Nintendo Switch game console, which is so hot it sold out within hours of being released on Friday. Can't get it at stores, but can get it at the QAE Auction!
