The Rocket Reader will be featuring select staff and specialists throughout the year. With a total of seven new staff members this year and a growing community, we’ll take time every few weeks, using a question and answer format, to introduce a classroom teacher or specialist.
First, a few words from Ms. Stone: “Thank you so much for the warm welcome. I'm very excited to be here, and it was such a treat meeting so many of you at Curriculum Night. I can tell that music is very much in the foundation of QAE and I'm excited to continue that tradition in a more formal setting. QAE is an outstanding community of learners and supporters, and I feel that support already. I'm humbled to be a part of your school and am eager to see where music takes us this year. Come say hi!” There were some common questions that came up at Curriculum Night that Ms. Stone will take on – here goes! Where in the world is music? I'm currently teaching in the far left portable behind the Treehouse. I'm working on coming up with a fun name for the space, but if you're gifted/interested in the area of decor, please let me know! I'll be working on getting the space looking like a warm learning environment over the next little while. When are you here? I'll be here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday mornings. After that I'm off to McDonald Elementary to finish out the week there. Read More… QAE's only kid-powered fundraising event of the year is coming soon!! Nothing validates this QAE pillar like spending 4 days in the woods with 26 kids. For the 5th year in a row, our 5th graders were lucky enough to take part in Islandwood's school overnight program. This year, as usual, was a transformative experience for our kids. During our time at Islandwood, the kids spent 9:00AM until 4:30PM outside every day. They learned about ecosystems, history, botany, art, gardening, and so much more. They studied macrovertebrates, estuaries, forest canopies, and water quality. They overcame individual fears and difficult group tasks. They played games, wrote reflections, and ate fantastic food. They sang songs about banana slugs and northwest trees, and some kids even performed live in front of 180 friends and strangers at a talent show. In the end, they bonded as a class, welcoming new friends and deepening their understanding of old ones. They were a fantastic group to spend a few days with out in the woods. Below are a few quotes from the students' blog posts about Islandwood: "I felt moss under my feet. I felt the sooty lightning tree. I felt warm victory on the teams course." - Camilla "I felt joy and relief when we left the canopy tower - but then the fear kicked in again when we crossed the suspension bridge blind folded." - Vince "I learned that an ecosystem is biotic and abiotic creatures working as a unit." - Emma A. Please read more of their Islandwood reflections and make some comments on the kids' blogs. You can find the blogs on their websites, accessible from my site, here: bailey.queenanneelementary.com/websites You can also see a mural and several artifacts from our trip on the stage in the lunchroom. Slugs UP! Joe Bailey-Fogarty bailey.queenanneelementary.com The author of the popular Amulet series, Kazu Kibuishi, is coming to Queen Anne Elementary next week, Thursday, September 25th at 1:30pm. He will be speaking to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Students will be coming home with pre-order forms this week, please have them filled out and returned by Monday, September 22nd. This visit has been brought to you by Mrs. Leland and our friends at University Book Store. The QAE PTSA Garden Committee is hosting our Annual School Beautification Day on Saturday, 9/27, from 9:30-12:30. We will be setting up raised planting beds, weeding, planting, painting (if the weather cooperates), mulching and sweeping our school into tip-top shape in anticipation of another terrific year as Explorers. If you have any questions please email Heather or Christa, our Garden Co-Chairs. Instrumental Music will be back at QAE again this year! So many instruments to choose from, but only one week to decide and return the form. Instrumental Music enrollment forms were sent home with all the 4th and 5th grade students and need to be returned to the enrollment box (marked and located on the 2nd floor of the Tree House, near the entrance) by Wednesday September 24th. I'm looking forward to a great year again at QAE. Carla Kirch QAE Administrative Assistant Kindergarten, First, and Second grade parents: Ready for a fun evening of connection and support for YOU as a parent? ParentNet is it. Our first meeting of the 2014-2015 school year is on September 29th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. There will be light refreshments and, for a nominal fee, child care for children over 4.
What is ParentNet? If you participated in a PEPS group when your child was a baby, this may be familiar: it's parents of kids in the same grade level coming together to talk about their children and their parenting. Topics are chosen by the parents at the meeting, and trained parent volunteers lead the discussions. It’s fun and social, but structured too – a perfect way to get to know other parents and share our experiences, advice and support. For more information, visit the QAE ParentNet website at qaeparentnet.weebly.com or email Jenny Brailey. We would like to invite all families of our QAE community to join us this Sunday for the QAE Back to School Picnic at Golden Gardens Park - Picnic Shelters 1 & 2 (map it) We will have burgers and hot dogs on the grill and family fun on the beach! The weather is supposed to be perfect so be sure to bring along sunscreen, buckets & shovels or a game for the kids to play! The menu will include: Burgers, Veggie Burgers, Hot Dogs, Potato Salad, Green Salad, Snacks, Cookies, Cupcakes and more! Note: If you have special dietary needs like gluten free or allergies, we encourage you to bring your own food & beverages. Let us know if you are able to contribute food, beverages or volunteer a little of your time to help make our picnic a success! (donations and volunteering are not required to attend) We look forward to seeing you there! If you have any questions, please reach out to our Community Event Co-Chairs: Suzanne Beckerman or Lindsey Carillo.
