Dear QAE Families,
What a wonderful community we have at Queen Anne Elementary. As I work on the last minute gifts to wrap in a box I think of the most important gift that so many parents give – the Gift of Time. I am so appreciative of the gift of time that so many of the parents here at QAE give every week. There are many times that we ask for volunteers for specific tasks and events – THANK YOU!!! but there is a mighty core group of volunteers that are plugging away every single week. I realize this gift of time to the school and the PTSA is something more treasured than anything I can wrap up under the tree. I wanted to thank these weekly volunteer warriors and can’t wait to see you in 2020 and kick off a whole new year:
Jody Stewart – she helps collect, answer and coordinate with the individual classroom coordinators in their class news.
Classroom Coordinators – The classroom news is one of the most important emails we get all week. Thank you to all our classroom coordinators that help take time each week to collect, coordinate and share! Here's the entire list: Justin Ward, Lindsay Coetzee, Maria Clabeaux, Jill Randall, Sydney Mintle, Rebekah DuBeau, Stacie Farrar, Sharon Breiner, Dana Pelleg, Lisa Christensen, Mary Gilliam, Erika Bloch, Veronika Ziegler, Siri Ito, Brett Adler, Tamara Convertino, Brandi Casto, Jamie Ross, Genevieve Kitsch, Jenny Feldman, Marna Metcalf, Jody Stewart, Rosa Alvarez, Nick Papadopulos, Rick North and Jenny Feldman.
Cindy Reiner / Kelly Essemier – so important to our staff, teachers and parents we are asking for payment or reimbursements. This team is working every week to update our books and process our check requests.
Mark Stewart – plugs away at the weekly Rocket Readers, social media and cleaning up our web page. In this day and age where there is a deluge of information Mark is so important in keeping us informed.
Shalini Nilakantan / Lisa Christensen – If there are events or not they are constantly thinking of events upcoming events, planning for future events, or cleaning up all the popcorn from Popcorn Fri-Yay!
Mary Rea, Jenn Lovin and April Jenks – the auction isn’t till March but there is a steady amount of work that happens every week. There is great organization and momentum in these weekly meetings.
And what kind of PTSA President would I be if I didn’t make a plug where we ask you to remember to make your donation to our Annual Fund Drive? Every few dollars make our goal of $60,000 possible--you can help us Raise the Rocket and get your tax-deductible donation in before the end of the year! And if we don’t reach our goal I’ll come back in the new year and remind you again. 😊
Thank you for being a part of the Queen Anne Elementary community — this is a busy time of the year for everybody and I wish everybody the holiday magical wish of a few minutes where you can take a breath, kick back and enjoy your beverage in peace.
Next month we enter the season of tours for prospective families interested in attending QAE next Fall. How time flies!
Know Families with Kindergartners Next Year?
If you know of any families who may be interested, please point them to our Prospective Families page which includes dates for the Open House and Tours. It also has some information about what makes Queen Anne Elementary unique, info about Project-Based Learning, etc.
School tours start in January and we need helpers to share what’s great about our school! Can you lead a tour for a small group of parents (training and talking points provided!)? Or do you love to bake and can provide some nut-free treats to help families feel welcome? We need your help! Please check out the SignUpGenius for the dates and times:

Not quite a volunteer position! The school is in need of a Playground/Recess supervisor for Monday through Friday approximately 2.5 hrs a day (9-11:30am). This is a paid position $16 an hour. If you're interested, contact Karen Alvarez in the office at email@example.com
Hello, families! We are headed into the next step of our planning phase for all in-school art residencies through the city's Creative Advantage program. We could use a few more parents at our next meeting on Monday, September 23rd from 3-6pm. If you are interested, please email parent Gillian Jorgensen at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
As we start the year, there are a few volunteer positions where we could use your help. QAE relies on volunteers to make our school flourish. We'd love you to join us! If you're interested in any of the roles or have any other questions, please reach out to PTSA President Sandra Nanney at email@example.com
Auction Focus Group - call it an auction, fundraiser or spring social but once a year we host an event where QAE comes together to socialize and raise money for our school. We want to change it up this year but before paying for deposits we want to get a group of parents together to brainstorm ideas. Would you be willing to meet as a small group for coffee? Or after work drink? FYI - we don’t have a Auction Team Lead yet. We have plenty of volunteers but not someone to marry it all together. If you are interested in leading PLEASE reach out to Sandra Nanney @ firstname.lastname@example.org
Legislative Director - do you like following the news? Do you read the voter pamphlets from cover to cover? This role might be right for you. Looking for someone that will inform our school of legislation that would impact our school community. Did you know that PTAs were created to advocate for the child. Please let us know if there are things we should advocate!
Families of Color co-director - Equity, diversity and the ongoing community dialogue to better educate ourselves and our children. Do you have the desire to further the conversation? Our amazing Leader, Kay Dumlao Doherty, is hoping to have a partner to help further the conversation and share the goals of making sure we take the time to connect and educate.
Fundraising Director - QAE PTSA hosts 3 fundraising events a year. As fundraising director you will review numbers and updates with the groups running the events. Support and brainstorm where needed. Usually the event teams are really focused on the execution to come to the boring board meetings :) Many years the fundraising director will run 1 of the 3 events themselves.
Assistant Treasurer - are you good with check requests? Or tallying numbers? Our co-treasurers would like to round out the team with an additional person. Full transparency - Kelly Essmeier, our assistant treasurer for 1 year and now treasurer for her 2nd year will be graduating from QAE. She is hoping to pass on the knowledge to the next team so we have good transitions.
We can add a lead to any position you are interested in. The President roles would appreciate a Co-President or a Co-Vice President to join them at the table. If you are interested please reach out to Sandra Nanney at email@example.com
As part of the Spring Project-Based Learning Night on June 18th, we'll be doing another MakerSpace MarketPlace. It was a huge hit in the Fall! Sign up here to take part! The signup is for the individuals and small groups who plan to make and sell items at the event and would like to have a booth (or table spot). By popular demand, there will be a bake sale -- you can use the sign up to donate baked good for the event.
Questions? Reach out to Kristi Barnes at firstname.lastname@example.org or Kristin Teske at email@example.com. Thanks so much!
Please join us on Tuesday, June 11th at 6:30pm at the QA Community Center for the final PTSA meeting of the year! We'll be voting on next year's budget and hearing from Janine about our move back to Queen Anne. Help us us plan for a great year at our newly expanded campus!
As we move back to Queen Anne into our expanded building, it's time a great time to get involved in the QAE community!
Are you an accounting wiz? Experience doing social media or marketing? Or eager to find out how the WA Legislative decisions affect QAE? No matter your interest, the QAE PTSA Board would love to hear from you!
No PTSA Board experience is necessary, and this is a fabulous way to get involved in shaping the future of your children's school. Thanks for considering! Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or talk to any of the current officers if you're interested or have any questions!
Here's where we could use help, but we can find a role that works with your interests and schedule!
Get ready for QAE's annual fundraising auction! March 22, 2019, 6-11pm at Block 41 in Belltown!
Get ready to join an incredible community of people who are ready to do whatever it takes to help QAE kids succeed. Did you know the annual auction supports 65% of the PTSA budget? Social Emotional Learning. A school counselor. Reading Specialist. These are just a few of the vital services that funds raised from our upcoming auction pay for. Without your help, these important school service could go away!
What you can do to help…
Start collecting auction items! We ask all QAE families to donate at least one thing. But please don’t stop there! The more donated items and services you contribute, the more funds we can raise for our school.
Potential Donation Ideas (Live or Online)
Gift certificates to restaurants, spas, retail stores in our neighborhood and beyond are all sought after items! So when you go out to a favorite spot, just ask - businesses are happy to donate. It's a win-win for them and us! Are you a season ticket holder? Work in the theatre or music industry? Sports, theater and concert tickets are great items to donate. Own a vacation home you'd be willing to rent to a QAE family? Going on a vacation? Ask the hotel/ski resort/b&b/cruise for a donation to the school -- so many places love the idea of being introduced to a whole new community!Camps, experiences, children's classes -- wherever your child attends is a great option! Access to a priceless experience? (movie premieres, private parties featuring a famous chef or sommelier, tours around an interesting workplace)

Now that school is underway, let’s get ready to help our students support the things we love about QAE! The Jog-A-Thon, our only student-driven fundraiser of the year, is just around the corner! Next week in your child's orange folder, look for a flyer with details about the jog-a-thon and easy instructions to get your student started with online fundraising in 10 minutes or less.
If you'd like to volunteer on the 11th, an online signup sheet will be coming soon!
Parents and family can purchase adult size jog-a-thon t-shirts for $10 each to show their QAE spirit while supporting the PTSA. As always, each student will receive a Jog-A-Thon t-shirt at no cost, celebrating their efforts. Purchase your shirt on the Jog-A-Thon page by Wednesday, 9/20.

Thanks to everyone who filled out a survey about priorities for the PTSA—and if you haven’t, please do! It’s open until June 5. You've got great ideas—a CPR/First Aid night, the return of ParentNet, class parent socials, and more. Come join the PTSA board and make them happen!
When my oldest daughter started kindergarten at QAE, I knew I wanted to get involved with the school and give back. I remember talking to my husband about it, and he said, “There are a lot of parents who are already really involved, and with your limited time, there are probably better places to volunteer.” I limited my involvement that first year, but then the next year, a mom in our Girl Scout troop was running the auction and put out a call to our troop moms for help. I said sure, and once I saw how much there was to do—not just for the auction, but for enrichment, for community events, for days like Hour of Code, and for administrative tasks like reimbursing teachers when they spend money on our kids out of pocket—and how few people were signed up to do it, I volunteered for a board position.
While there are many people who volunteer in some capacity for the school (thank you thank you, a hundred times thank you!), and many who simply can’t, what I’ve seen over the past couple of years is that it’s the same families and people who step up again and again. This is a tricky model, as 1) those people get waaaaay burned out, and 2) when burnout happens, or when families graduate, the PTSA has to scramble to fill a bunch of vital roles at once. Which is all to say, please help us broaden the pool of PTSA volunteers. There is a role for everyone and every time limitation, and the more of us we have working together, the lighter the load will be on everyone and the easier the transitions from year to year.
Here are the PTSA roles we have open for next year—please consider letting us know of your interest:
Note that all below positions will receive a qaeptsa.org email address. You will receive many updates through the month in regards to activities or requests for feedback so we can brainstorm ideas and situations.
Feel free to write to me directly with your interest!
Have you always wanted to volunteer for with QAE but find it hard to make time? Looking for something you can do that will make a big impact but has flexibility? Maybe you are just trying find a way to assuage guilt while binge watching your favorite show
The Auction Committee can use your help writing thank you cards! We have close to two hundred Thank Yous to write to let the amazing donors all over this community know how much of an impact they made on our world.
Commit to writing 5 or 20. We will provide the note cards the pre-printed envelopes and the stamps. You provide the honest gratitude, the ink and the time.
