Queen Anne Elementary needs safer crossing for our students, especially at the Crazytown intersection (4th & Boston)! SDOT is asking for your help in developing their Safe Routes to School program.
"Early next year we’ll introduce new pedestrian and bicycle safety education and encouragement programs along with revised enforcement commitments in our school zones. Another substantial component of this work is to continue to improve the built environment to better link parents, teachers and students to schools. And we need your help! We want to know where people are speeding, where people fail to stop for pedestrians or where crossing and/or sidewalk improvements are needed. And we have developed an online tool to help collect this information. The feedback you provide will be used to prioritize future infrastructure investments, enforcement activities, and educational outreach. In fact, SDOT will develop conceptual designs for 12 locations selected through this exercise and we will build each of these improvements over the next few years." Follow the link below to share your thoughts with SDOT using our wikimap: Seattle’s School Road Safety Action Plan Wikimap Last day of school for 2014 is tomorrow, Friday, December 19, also a one hour early release day (2:40pm).

Flyers for the Raise for Maize Campaign went home in orange folders this week. To show their support, our 3rd, 4th & 5th graders collaborated on the following request: "As you know, we are partner schools with Dwankhozi Primary School. Did you know that many of the 600 students that attend the school experience something called the Hungry Season each year? The Hungry Season is from January through March and it is when the food that villages grow to eat runs out. It is the rainy season and they need to wait until March for their new crops of food to be ready. The Hunger Season means that children are only getting one meal a day at home, and they are coming to school hungry. This makes it very hard to learn. The school has early release days during this time because the students have no energy to learn. Many do not come to school because they are looking for food. We can help! Some women in the school community are willing to make the students a school lunch of nshima during this Hungry Season. They just need us to help buy some maize. If the students know that they can have a meal at school, they will come to school. The meal will give them the energy they need to focus on their learning. $10 feeds 60 students for one day – that is like the whole 4th grade at our school $50 feeds 300 students for one day – almost our whole school $100 feeds their entire school, which is 600 kids, for one day. They only need to be fed for 6 weeks (30 school days.) That's $3,000. To keep 600 students learning. The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes want the students at Queen Anne Elementary to raise this money for the students at our partner school. We decided the best way to do this would be to ask QAE kids to do service work for friends and neighbors for a Raise for Maize Campaign donation. Every penny we raise will go towards the purchase of food for the students at Dwankhozi Primary School. Here are some ideas that our classes came up with for service: - Walk the dog - Sell hot cocoa - Rake leaves - Pick up your room - Do the dishes - Take out the trash Bring your donations to your classroom teacher anytime before Winter Break! Thanks for your help!" Our enrichment session is coming to a close. Your enrichment provider should have communicated that last session date with you already, but here is a handy online reference. See below for last session dates for QAE Enrichment Session One. You may also view our Enrichment Calendar.

In sixty days our community has raised over $100,000 to support QAE! This has been an incredibly successful Fall Fundraising campaign -- especially since we modified our fundraising schedule, bundling the Jog-a-thon and Explorer Fund Drive. Together these two events have raised a total of $106,414 in direct donations (matching not included). We are humbled, grateful, and motivated by your commitment to support our students, staff, and school. We would personally like to thank our returning Jog-a-thon leads, Kristi Barnes and Karen Longeran for their incredible organization and time and for making this event so fun for our students and staff. Additionally, we want to thank Lauren Haley, our Fundraising Co-Chair and Explorer Fund Drive lead, for diving in to this new role with excitement, energy, and a great attitude. Our final PTSA fundraising event for the school year is the school auction -- so save the date for March 20th. With gratitude, Amy Janas & Heath Dixon QAE PTSA Co-Presidents To learn more about what your QAE PTSA supports, look here. It's not too late to donate. You can donate to the QAE PTSA, anytime.
