Don't Forget...
QAE is having an Open House this Thursday, Sept. 1 from 5-7pm at our new location on Boston St. Please enter through the main entrance on Boston St. into the brick building so that you don't miss out on anything! This is an informal event allowing each family to tour at their own pace. You can come at any time during the two hour window and get through quickly or stay as long as you like. We will have several informational tables, healthy snacks provided in the Community Garden by the Garden Committee, sweets for sale in front of the building from the Street Treats Truck, and the staff will be on hand for meeting and chatting. Make sure you come in through the main entrance so you can get your free QAE Explorers pencil! There will also be logo gear for purchase, so bring your checkbooks. It should be a really fun evening. If you have any questions please contact Kristin Teske at [email protected]. Thanks, and looking forward to seeing you there! Cost: $90 (for the full year) When: Tuesdays, 3:35-4:35; October 4, 2011 – April 24, 2012. Where: QAE, Mrs. Cryan-Leary’s classroom Who: ALL grades welcome! This year, QAE and Chess Mates Foundation (www.chessmates.org) are bringing chess club to our QAE kids in a weekly, after-school program. Chess Mates is a local, nonprofit organization that focuses on chess as a teaching tool with intellectual and emotional benefits. Chess Mates provides each of its 30+ participating schools with a Chess Club Coach, as well as teaching materials and administrative support needed to initiate, operate and maintain their chess clubs. In addition to regular weekly classes Chess Mates also sponsors three major scholastic tournaments each year—the first of which is in November! In order for the program to be successful at our school, PARENT VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!! When you sign your child up, please consider volunteering your time to assist the coach and supervise kids during club meetings, or make yourself available for tournament and other after-club duties. Chess Mates cost is low in part because they rely on parents to be present at each club meeting to assist the coach with classroom management, locate missing children, and provide feedback to the organization. For questions, contact Chess Club Coordinator Nan Noble at [email protected], or Elizabeth Kruse at [email protected]. Reminder that tomorrow, Aug 31, is the last day to enroll your child(ren) at Kids Co before they open up enrollment to families at other schools. Click here for more info.
On Tuesday, August 30, Seattle Public Schools invites students, families, teachers and staff to kick off the school year with a community-wide Celebration of Learning at the Seattle Center's Fisher Pavilion. The program includes remarks by Interim Superintendent, Dr. Susan Enfield and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn. Music will be provided by the All-City Band. Representatives from Transportation, Nutrition Services and Enrollment will be there to answer questions from families.
In addition, there will be drawings for prizes. All those attending will receive a ticket as they enter and winning numbers will be drawn at the end of the event for items that include dinner for two at the Space Needle, gift certificate to Dukes Chowder House and Seattle Mariners memorabilia. Community Groups can set up a resource table for families or staff at the celebration. Please contact Richard Lee at [email protected] for more information. ![]() Hello Explorers! We wanted to update you on some QAE projects that are now complete or near completion. We will update everyone as more improvements are tackled and finished. The most important thing to note is that we are on schedule and the buildings and playground will be ready for the opening day of school, September 7! Some highlights: The Covered play area: instead of replacing the chain link fence, translucent panels will be installed to help keep wind and rain out of the play court area. (this work may not be ready for the first day of school but the approximate timeline of completion is mid September). Asphalt areas: the remaining areas (parking, walkways and play) that had not been done between the two buildings are being resurfaced, and the area behind the wood building will be cleaned and seal coated. Ramp: a built up asphalted ramp will be added near the play court, with work scheduled the week of August 15-21. Carpeting: has been ordered and will be installed in the Kindergarten classroom by mid August. Wood floors in the wooden building: the hallways wood floors are being refinished and the maintenance staff will tile two classroom floors and will be completed by the start of the school year. Wood Floors in the brick building: the hallways are being refinished. Gym: will be improved with whiteboards, portable projector and portable sound system. New window shades are being installed in all rooms. Hello QAE Families!
The PTSA is excited to announce we will be hosting an Open House on September 1st, from 5-7PM at our newly remodeled building on Boston Street. It will be an informal gathering, where you and your student can check out the school and school grounds, chat with our teachers and school staff, and find out a bit more about the QAE PTSA's programs and offerings. It will be an open platform, so you can come any time between 5-7, and hurry through, or linger, whichever suits you and your family. It should be a fun night, and we very excited to see you there! Mark your calendars for September 1, and get ready to see your new school! Kristin Teske QAE PTSA Activities Chair |
