BOOK A SITTER FOR Friday, March 25 !

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO PLAN THE LAUNCH PARTY AND AUCTION
Have you booked your sitter yet for Friday, March 25?  It’s sure to be the QAE social event of the season!
In addition to once in a lifetime teacher experiences and class art projects, there will be at least two vacation homes auctioned off (Los Cabos, Mexico and Sun Valley, ID).  Please contact us if you have a vacation home or special experience you’d like to donate.  We also are looking for restaurant gift certificates, so if you have a favorite restaurant that you can ask, please use the attached procurement form and submit to us.
We need some volunteers to help make this event successful!  We specifically need someone from Joe Bailey’s class to lead a children’s art project, a person to lead the dessert dash, and a detail oriented person proficient with Excel.  We’ll also need volunteers for the night of the event to help with check in, check out, and be spotters during the live auction portion of the evening.  If you are at all interested (and it will be FUN!), please let us know.
Please contact Natalie Carlson (carlson_natalie@earthlink.net)  or Holley Ring (hring@windermere.com) if you are willing and able to help.

Details will be shared as they are finalized but you can plan on doors opening at 7, drinks and dinner.   Join our team and help us finalize the details!

Hi all,
We have a request from the office for the donation of shirts and pants that could be used in case of accidents/emergencies.  Kindergarten sizes are most needed.  Elastic waists are best, as they can fit a larger variety of sizes.

Speaking of high fashion, the QAE logo long sleeve t-shirts and hoodies (both kids and adults sizes) will be available for sale at the PTSA meeting on the 3rd, so bring your checkbook!  They run $18-$40, and are super cool!

SAVE THE DATE – Friday, March 25, 2011

It’s official!   The Queen Anne Elementary Launch Party and Auction will be held on Friday March 25 at Kaspar’s (lower Queen Anne location). Doors open at 7pm.  The event will be an opportunity to socialize with the parents and staff of QAE and raise money for the school.  A limited number of one –in –a –lifetime experiences with teaching staff and class art projects will be auctioned off.    Would your child like to be Principal for a Day?  Or attend a sleepover in the library with Mr. Elliott?  Those are two of the items that will be auctioned off.  Don’t miss out! We need some volunteers to help make this event successful!  We specifically need someone from each class to lead a children’s art project, someone to put together a video of the first year, and a detail oriented person proficient with Excel.  We’ll need other volunteers, too – so if you are at all interested (and it will be FUN!), please let us know.

The QAE PTSA Enrichment Committee would like to announce before and after school clubs planned for winter and spring 2011.  Registration information will be posted soon for Upcoming Clubs on the Before/After School website (http://www.queenanneelementary.com/before%2Fafter-school.html).

Upcoming Clubs:

Creative Drama Play (K-5) Thursdays, Feb 3rd - April 14th, 3:40 – 5:15
Charlotte Campbell from SP Nation returns to lead another session of Drama Club.  Join us on an imagination adventure! Each week we will visit a new country and learn about how that culture puts on plays.  We’ll make puppets, masks, and more and play lots of fun drama games!

Lego Club Pre Engineering Mornings (K-2) Fridays, Feb 4th – Apr 15th, 8:00-9:15
Morning Lego is BACK!  Students will build cities, bridges, and motorized cars/planes and explore the many creative possibilities of engineering with the LEGO® system. With access to over 100,000 pieces of LEGO, your child will have the opportunity to build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Engineering instructor to guide them.

Lego Club Pre Engineering Afternoon (K-2), Tuesdays, April 5th – June 7th, 3:40-5:10
For you Lego lovers that prefer afternoons.  Same class as described above.

Potential Clubs: Please email apayauys@gmail.com if you are interested in any of these potential clubs or have any questions.

All School Play starring our 3-4-5 Grade Students, Tuesday Afternoon rehearsals beginning mid-March
Join the cast or crew that will perform Peter Pan (or Robin Hood) in the spring.  Students will learn all aspects of theater production, be a part of a team, and have fun acting in a school play!  SP Nation will lead the production.

Chess Club (K-5) Afternoon
Chess study has shown to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence. Classes are tailored to the experience level among the students enrolled.  Classes typically include: basic principles and strategy of how to open a chess game, how to conduct the middle game, and how to win (or avoid losing) in the endgame.

Chorus (K-5)

Students will be instructed in singing and performance techniques, including breathing, posture, vocal production and enunciation, and will learn songs, with an emphasis on positivity, peace and the environment.  We will perform at school functions, as desired, and also at community functions, for example, an Earth Day Event with People for Puget Sound.

3-4-5 Grade Spanish, Two Day a Week (W/F) Mornings

Our Tu/Th Sponge Spanish teacher is available to teach a two-day a week Spanish class for 3-4-5 grade students.

Legislature Cuts

1/19/2011

Dear Parents,

The 3rd round of cuts to K-12 Education are being made and it’s ugly. Retroactive cuts to K-4 enhancements and cuts to levy equalization are on the table. Right now it looks like K-4 enhancements will go. This doesn’t mean programs will be cut this year (districts have to honor contracts and won’t do mid-year layoffs), just that the state won’t be sending along the money that districts were told they were getting. This will put districts into financially vulnerable position going into the next 2-year budget cycle. WSPTA testified against retroactive cuts and the ability for districts to absorb the costs.

MANY OF THESE CUTS will be carried over to next biennium, so it is vital you communicate with your legislator and let them know your priorities.

When emailing your legislator ask them to:
-Use caution on retroactive cuts;

-Going forward, fund 2776 in next biennium (this would initiate a new program for basic education)

-Take measures to curb need for remediation. WSPTA's testimony has been encouraging K-readiness assessments (includes the literacy assessment we want); evaluation pilots (teacher quality); education ombudsman (help for families negotiating system and resolving serious conflict; promoting better district practices.)

Queen Anne and Magnolia residents (36th District): your legislators and email addresses are listed below:

Senator:
Jeanne Kohl-Welles
jeanne.kohl-welles@leg.wa.gov

Representatives:
Reuven Carlyle
reuven.carlyle@leg.wa.gov

Mary Lou Dickerson
marylou.dickerson@leg.wa.gov

If you live outside Queen Anne or Magnolia you can find your legislator here: http://www.leg.wa.gov/pages/home.aspx (click on the tab 'Find Your District')

If you have any questions, concerns or need assistance please contact our PTSA Legislative Chair, Jenice Lee at jenicelealee@Hotmail.com
