Thanks to everyone who filled out a survey about priorities for the PTSA—and if you haven’t, please do! It’s open until June 5. You've got great ideas—a CPR/First Aid night, the return of ParentNet, class parent socials, and more. Come join the PTSA board and make them happen!
When my oldest daughter started kindergarten at QAE, I knew I wanted to get involved with the school and give back. I remember talking to my husband about it, and he said, “There are a lot of parents who are already really involved, and with your limited time, there are probably better places to volunteer.” I limited my involvement that first year, but then the next year, a mom in our Girl Scout troop was running the auction and put out a call to our troop moms for help. I said sure, and once I saw how much there was to do—not just for the auction, but for enrichment, for community events, for days like Hour of Code, and for administrative tasks like reimbursing teachers when they spend money on our kids out of pocket—and how few people were signed up to do it, I volunteered for a board position. While there are many people who volunteer in some capacity for the school (thank you thank you, a hundred times thank you!), and many who simply can’t, what I’ve seen over the past couple of years is that it’s the same families and people who step up again and again. This is a tricky model, as 1) those people get waaaaay burned out, and 2) when burnout happens, or when families graduate, the PTSA has to scramble to fill a bunch of vital roles at once. Which is all to say, please help us broaden the pool of PTSA volunteers. There is a role for everyone and every time limitation, and the more of us we have working together, the lighter the load will be on everyone and the easier the transitions from year to year. Here are the PTSA roles we have open for next year—please consider letting us know of your interest: Note that all below positions will receive a qaeptsa.org email address. You will receive many updates through the month in regards to activities or requests for feedback so we can brainstorm ideas and situations.
Feel free to write to me directly with your interest! Thanks, Jenna president2@qaeptsa.org Have you always wanted to volunteer for with QAE but find it hard to make time? Looking for something you can do that will make a big impact but has flexibility? Maybe you are just trying find a way to assuage guilt while binge watching your favorite show
The Auction Committee can use your help writing thank you cards! We will provide the note cards the pre-printed envelopes and the stamps. You provide the honest gratitude, the ink and the time. Time Commitment - Monthly PTSA Board meeting and will assist based on your strength during each of the 3 fundraising campaigns. Fund Drive Coordinator - Each Fall we do a direct ask campaign of our parent community. Are you good at coordinating the message? Follow up on the messaging? You don't have to knock or call but you need to be able to coordinate and hit send. Time Commitment - Approx. 5 hours of thinking through the details beforehand. And then 3-5 hours a week during the 2 week open campaign period. Note that Fund Drive actual dates will be set with Coordinator. Auction Village - The annual auction truly takes a VILLAGE. We can slice and dice this in a number of different ways to make it work for you. Please join us a one or a group of friends in helping support during the months or days leading up to the auction. Auction Coordinator (Procurement) - Are you good at asking people for donations? Are you an organized individual that can keep track of the 100's of donations we receive from our community businesses, families and students? This will be for you. Time Commitment - Slow and Steady is the game with a lot of focus in February and March. Note Auction is on Friday, March 16. If you're interested in any of these positions, please contact the PTSA at president@qaeptsa.org Helping out in the library is a great way to support QAE. Plus you get to hang out with Mr. Jeffery. Here's our note from our amazing librarian:
Checking out books, shelving books, talking about books, browsing books, helping student navigate on computer or iPad - QAE library volunteers get it all! Would you possibly consider giving your time to the library this year? I’ll take as much as you are willing to give. Ideally, you would commit to a schedule so that we can count on daily support. We are very flexible, and if there is a day you can’t volunteer, just let me know. If you want to be a part of the library but have concerns committing to a schedule, then let me know you’d like to be “Volunteer on Demand”. We’d love for you to be a part of the library family. If you have some interest and/or questions, please email me. I’ll love to hear from you. Jeffrey (aka…Mr. Jeffrey) jsriley@seattleschools.org 206.252.2511 qaelibrary.org @qaelibrary The PTSA is looking for some wonderful parents to help support our amazing QAE community. Would you like to get involved? We can guarantee it'll be a fun and rewarding experience!
Safety Coordinator -- Help Our Explorers Travel Safely! As we have been discussing the expansion of QAE next year, the subject of what we can do to get everyone to and from school as safely as possible has come up. The PTSA is looking for a volunteer interested in taking charge of safety plans and programs for QAE. If planning, coordination, and safety is your passion, we'd love to hear from you! Treasurer -- Do You Know QuickBooks? The PTSA is looking to fill a very important role on the board, Treasurer. Ideally we're looking for someone who knows QuickBooks. We've streamlined the position in the last year to have fewer responsibilities and tasks, but it still remains a critical position for us to fill. If you know of someone (or many someones, or you are that someone!) that's right for the role we'd love to hear from you. Fundraising Chair Not a position to fear! Rather, someone to lead the fall fund drive and to check-in with Auction chair and Jog-A-Thon chairs. Videographer We’d love to do a project where we video key teachers/staff/students answering FAQs about QAE that would then be posted to the website. If you're interested in any of these positions, please contact Ian Stewart and Jenna Free at president@qaeptsa.org. Between May 8th and 26th, Mrs. Veleber will be leading a unit on rolling and pedestrian safety. The 3rd through 5th grades classes will be using bicycles. In order to assist all students in their learning, it will be very beneficial to have volunteers to help with each 3rd through 5th grade class.
Help is needed between 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. Please email Mrs. Veleber at bcveleber@seattleschools.org if you're able to volunteer to assist with this unit on any days in May! It takes a village to run a school auction! Our wonderful Auction Committee needs a little help with a variety of tasks:
• Are you good at emails? Following up with a list of individuals and checking their names off when you receive a response? We need a parent volunteer to help follow up with our QAE staff and teachers on their Sign Up Parties. Can you say Yes to 30 mins a week for the next 3-4 weeks? • Do you like a puzzle? Do you like seating arrangements? Our awesome 5th grade parents, who have done this for years, would like to train and pass the baton of how to arrange the QAE Auction seating. If you are able to commit to learn this year and arrange seats for next year please let us know. Sign up with a friend! And you can work on seating arrangements over a glass of wine. • Printing Contact? We are looking for in-kind donation or deep discount to help print our Auction brochure. Do you have a contact or would your company be able to help donate their copier services? • Student Photos - Natalia Dotto, QAE parent and photographer, need help shuttling kids to and from their classroom. We need one more parent helper on Feb. 7th. Sign up here to help... • Digital Photo Organizer? Do you have a 2-5 hours at the end of February to help rename and organize the pictures with the students LAST NAME, FIRST INITIAL of the student. Cari Lui of Yuen Lui has generously agreed to print all of the photos for us, but it is imperative that they be organized by class and last name prior to the printing process. • Production Assistant to Auction Video? Need volunteers to help with the auction video. Kelly Essmeier, awesome QAE parent, is producing our video this year. Can you help support our video, brainstorm, assist with messaging? A team of creative parents is better than one. Any of the above sound interesting or need more information? Contact the auction team at auction@qaeptsa.org to learn more or access our Fundraising page where we will continue to update our asks: http://www.qaeptsa.org/fundraising.html Help! Parents of students in grades K-3 are **desperately needed to assist in hearing and vision screenings for our students.** There are slots this Thursday (8 - 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 - 11 a.m.) and next Thursday. You'll help the school nurse, Karen, with simple screenings (have the kids read letters on an eye chart). It's fun to work with with the kids and it's important to catch these issues.
