How does Washington’s education system stack up against other states? Does money really matter? Is early learning the key to improving outcomes for students?
See and hear the faces of our public education system as they comment on these questions in the 2009 documentaryParamount Duty. We'll watch the movie online and hold a live chat as it plays. Although the movie is a couple of years old, the lessons about our education still apply. The film looks inside the schools of Washington State to document the challenges facing this generation of teachers, students and administrators. Key leaders of a movement attempt to rescue education from apathy and neglect. Watch Bill Gates Sr., University of Washington President Mark Emmert, and Governor Christine Gregoire try to address the pressing need for social and financial commitment to our future through educational reform. Paramount Duty is a film by director Peter J. Vogt and LEV co-founder and president Nick Hanauer. Just go to the LEV Live channel at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/lev-live1 a little before noon on Tuesday, Oct. 18th, and the movie will begin playing automatically! Wow! When you get a minute check out the front of the brick building. It looks AMAZINGLY better. For all of the families that came and participated, a deep and heartfelt THANK YOU!! We plan to bring in dynamic and engaging speakers who are experts on topics that interest you as parents. As part of this process, we are using a survey to get a feel for your appetite for attending presentations and the topics that most interest you. We would really appreciate your candid responses -- it will only take a few minutes to complete. To complete the survey, just go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K7J5BK7 Please complete your survey by Friday, October 7. Thanks so much for your participation. We're so happy everyone is enjoying the garden! Our mission is to continue to create an environment in the garden where our QAE community can:
Observe, Learn, Create, Commune, Meditate, ... and Eat! At the same time, we need everyone -- adults and kids-- to follow the Garden Rule when it comes to picking: Please, always ask permission of a teacher or garden staffer before you pick. The only exception to the rule is the Sungold tomatoes-- but even with the Sungolds, we are fair to others and limit the amount that we enjoy, always leaving some behind for our friends. We've been waiting on a number of red tomatoes to ripen to the point that we could create a salsa for all of our school to enjoy at Monday's lunch. On Thursday morning this past week, we went to the garden and saw that all of the ripe tomatoes had been picked! In addition, the dwarf watermelons, which we were so excited to share with the kids, have been taken as they ripen by an unknown person. Although there are "Ask Before Picking" signs throughout the garden, all of us have loved watching the kids eat and enjoy those beautiful little Sungold Tomatoes so much that we've let them feast! This may have left some parents uncertain about the importance of the "Ask First" rule. We're all learning as we go. We want everyone to enjoy the garden, BUT it's so important that we all follow the rule about picking so that the whole school can use and take pleasure in our crops. Please communicate this rule to your children and help them to understand the value of a community garden that belongs to each of us. Thank you so much! |
