(From Seattle Public Schools)
Families invited to share thoughts on Year 2 of Student Assignment Transition Plan Regional meetings November 4-16 CENTRAL REGION SCHOOLS Our regional meeting is scheduled for: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15 6:30-8 p.m. at Garfield High School 400 23rd Ave. S. (However, families are welcome to attend any of the meetings noted below) In 2009, the Seattle School Board approved a New Student Assignment Plan, school attendance area boundaries and a Transition Plan for 2010-11, the first year of implementation. The plan responds to what families requested during more than two years of extensive community engagement – a plan that is predictable, equitable and easy to understand. Work has begun to create the Transition Plan for 2011-12, which will set out rules for the continued phasing in of the New Student Assignment Plan. Seattle Public Schools is seeking input from families, staff and community members to help shape the Transition Plan. A series of regional and drop-in meetings are planned. A recommended Transition Plan for 2011-12 will be presented to the School Board in January. Among the topics included in the discussion will be development of geographic zones for option schools. The board will also be considering, among other topics, how the Transition Plan for next year will address non-attendance area kindergarten siblings; schools with over or under capacity enrollment; transition tiebreakers; transportation and high school open choice seats. Regional meetings will include a presentation, question-and-answer session, discussion and opportunity to provide feedback. Interpretation services will be provided at each of the meetings, and light refreshments will be served. Child care will not be available, but books and drawing and coloring supplies will be provided. For additional information, visit the “Get Involved” page at www.seattleschools.org.
